1-day-tour-giraffe-center-nairobi

Although it tends to be promoted as a children’s outing, the Giraffe Centre has serious aims. Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), it has successfully boosted the population of the rare Rothschild’s giraffe from an original nucleus of animals that came from a wild herd near Soy in western Kenya. The centre’s other main mission is to educate children about conservation.

The Giraffe Centre is the public side of Giraffe Manor, so if you are staying at the latter, you will have an even closer engagement with the giraffes from your table in the breakfast room or even through your bedroom window. If you’re not able to stay at Giraffe Manor, the AFEW Giraffe Centre is a rewarding alternative.

You’ll get some great mug shots from the giraffe-level observation tower (note the viewing platform faces west, so be prepared for the lighting), where the elegant, slow-motion giraffes push their huge heads through to be fed the pellets you’re given to offer them. There are various other animals around, including a number of tame warthogs, and a wooded 95-acre (40-hectare) nature sanctuary across the road, which is a good area for birdwatching.

Giraffe Centre & Manor Day Tour – Nairobi

After you arrive at the Giraffe Centre and pay the entrance fee, your experience begins. To begin with, you’ll enjoy a short, exciting talk about Kenya’s giraffes, especially the rare Rothschild species. Next, you can ask the friendly staff for pellets so you can feed the giraffes.

Although giraffes mainly feed on leaves in the wild, in contrast, the pellets contain essential nutrients. Therefore, you should feed them one at a time. By doing so, it becomes more fun, and you’ll avoid any risk of being bitten.

In case you’re feeling bold, place a pellet between your lips. Then, lean in for a gentle giraffe kiss! Of course, this is a great moment for a photo. Afterwards, you can take many more photos as you enjoy time with these gentle giants.

In addition to the giraffes, you can also visit the nearby tortoises and warthogs. Moreover, you may want to browse the souvenir shop. Alternatively, grab a snack or drink at the café.

Before leaving, take time to walk through the peaceful nature sanctuary just across from the Centre. Along the way, you’ll enjoy local plants, birds, and shady paths. If you’d like, you can stay as long as you wish. Meanwhile, enjoy the calm setting before heading back.
